A trauma is a psychological wound as a result of an overwhelming experience. That experience can be a single event or a more consistent and repetitive one that takes place over time. The sense of being overwhelmed can be delayed for years as the person struggles to cope with the immediate circumstances. A person’s ability to cope with and integrate the thoughts and feelings involved with that experience can be extremely difficult and the trauma may have emotional as well physical effects including insomnia, fatigue and heart racing. Often people who suffer from a trauma tend to seek out situations or people that recreate the overwhelming experience making healing quite difficult. Counselling clients who have been through trauma, we understand the importance of helping them rebuild trust in other people and processing trauma related memories, feelings and beliefs.
